Working With Rebel Cow
The Amy and Ben Interview – October 5, 2013
Amy: “Thank you for sitting down with me to talk about working with Rebel Cow. I’ve been working for you as your “marketing department” for a while now…so, let’s start from the beginning. As successful as your company has been for the previous 11 years, why start professional marketing efforts in your 12th year of business?”
Ben: “Well, it’s hard when you’re a small business to find time to do extra activities. Plus, devising and executing marketing strategies requires someone with that background and experience. Being a small business, I don’t have the resources to hire a big marketing firm. So, to find someone like you….Rebel Cow Marketing…to come in and give me the individual attention that I need…and work on a contract basis….it’s flexible. It was a commitment that was a lot easier for me to make because it’s affordable. We get an experienced Marketing and Sales person to run our Marketing Department for a certain amount of hours per week…and you’re a contractor, so I don’t incur the costs of an employee. It’s perfect for us.”
Amy: “When you hired me, one of the Marketing pieces that I suggested we implement was a brochure. You were initially hesitant and said you didn’t know what I could possibly put in a brochure. Now that we have our gorgeous brochure finished, what are your thoughts about it? Is it easier to see what I was envisioning? Do you like it?”
Ben: “I do. Absolutely. I wouldn’t have visualized that on my own. It did take a little convincing to get me to agree to the brochure because I just wasn’t convinced that people would take the time to read it. But, I, also, realize that, from a marketing perspective, it’s kind of hard to do marketing without some literature to give to people. So, it really does make sense on a lot of levels….and it looks great. I also like the ideas you’ve come up with to grow our following on Facebook. They are working really well. The cooking tips, famous food quotes….people really seem to like them and more people now follow our Page. Nice job.”
Amy: “Thank you! I’m very happy to hear it. Some people don’t think to use a caterer because they are unaware of how easy and affordable it is. I wanted to change that perception and make Food For Thought very approachable. In terms of some of the sales/growth strategies that I’ve suggested we launch…initiatives that were designed to increase visibility and capture an audience who may not have considered Food For Thought prior to this….what are some of your favorites?
Ben: “Well, the Re-Branding is a great example. We love our new logo look. It updates us but isn’t such a drastic change that it’s unrecognizable. The Mailers are another perfect example. I mean, it’s something that Rebel Cow’s done for us that has been a huge contribution. I’ve talked about it for years…I’ve even given it a go myself, in the past…but, it was, you know, using Microsoft Word Documents… and, ultimately, it looked like just that. It looked like something that I did myself. But, the idea that you suggested, a targeted mailing offering dinner packages that are a set price and easy to choose from made us approachable to people who didn’t even know we were here. We’ve really received a good response from the 3 different Mailers we’ve sent in the last 3 quarters this year, and it definitely raised our visibility. Plus, the professional messaging, level of design, and print quality really conveyed that we are an established business. We’ve certainly gained new customers we wouldn’t have gained without the Mailers. We got really good feedback from customers, afterward, as well…and I feel confident that they will be back. You created the ideas, designed them, targeted the customers…and got it done.
Amy: “I really like the fact that you’re always open to what I suggest and emphasize to you in terms of marketing. It’s what you’re paying me for, of course, but, as the owner of a business, it can be difficult to let someone else take the reins in some departments. You and Dee have always made me feel like part of the team. I appreciate that because it’s the vision I hold for Rebel Cow Marketing…..that, even though, technically, I am your consultant…your ‘contract marketing department’…if you’re my client, I view myself as part of your team. So, thank you, to both of you, for never making me feel like a consultant. I value feeling like we are all working toward these goals together.”
Ben: “Well, if we had all the answers, previously, we would have already done it ourselves, you know?”
Amy: “Yes. It’s a good fit. I think it’s a good fit for both of us.”
Ben: “It is.”
